Seesmic Desktop & Twitter: How to target crucial voices from the crowd?

seesmic-desktopIt seems pretty clear that in order to use Twitter effectively, you’ll need to use an external platform. I’m sampling Seesmic Desktop, and so far I’m impressed. Seesmic Desktop gives you control of your Facebook and multiple Twitter accounts – all under the one roof.

If you following quite a number of people, keeping track of thousands of messages can be difficult. Perhaps you really want to keep track of some key people, but you never see their messages because their voice isn’t loud enough from all the chatter in the room. In order to fix the problem, rather than telling everyone to leave the room, pick out the people you really want to hear, and make them stand right in front of you. This is what Seesmic Desktop does. All you need to do is create a userlist (a group), and then add one of your Twitter friends to this group.

The advantage in Seesmic Desktop is in its customisation. It gives you the opportunity to detach columns and customise what you want to see in each column. For example, you might want to set one screen for your latest tweets, another for your replies or perhaps one of the filtered user lists, so you are only targeting a limited list of people. You also can have a different account in a separate column, so keeping track of multiple accounts becomes easy.

Although there are many programs out there that can achieve a similar result, so far I am impressed with Seesmic Desktop. It is simple, easy, free and certainly a must if you need to trim your overgrown list of friend updates.
